As Editor for Afterall’s Exhibition Histories series of books, I work with a research and publishing team on critical analysis of shows of contemporary art from the last sixty years. I am passionate about Exhibition Histories as a transnational field of endeavour that does not privilege subjects, theories or practices anchored in West Europe and North America. My work for Afterall informs the programme of study that I provide as co-Pathway Leader, with Pablo Lafuente, for the MRes Art course in Exhibition Studies at Central Saint Martins, where we attract an exceptionally strong community of international students.
My recent published work includes ‘“Magiciens de la Terre” and the Development of Transnational Project-Based Curating’, the core essay for a book dedicated to critical reappraisal of the Paris show promoted as the ‘first worldwide exhibition of contemporary art (Making Art Global (Part 2): ’Magiciens de la Terre’ 1989, London: Afterall, 2013). Forthcoming is my contribution to the Documents of Contemporary Art series of books, for which I will focus on exhibitions and specifically the role played by artists in defining and challenging the exhibition form and processes (Exhibitions, London and Cambridge MA: Whitechapel Gallery and The MIT Press, 2014).
I originally studied Experimental Psychology (Balliol College, Oxford University) and Art History (Courtauld Institute, London) before moving into Visual Cultures and then Cultural Studies (Goldsmiths College, London). My PhD addressed limit experience and its approximation in contemporary art, prehistoric art, psychiatry and neuroscience, with an emphasis on strands of French thought in the mid nineteenth to mid twentieth centuries.
